Leadership Integrity: Are you trustworthy?
What Establishes Trustworthiness?
When we drive across a bridge, we don’t often think about whether the bridge will hold up our car as we cross it? Or, board an airplane and wonder if it will fly? Why is that?
Continuing our analogy of structural integrity and leadership integrity, in the last article I established that structural integrity is simply a measure of the structure’s ability to perform its intended function safely and reliably over its designed lifespan.
Our trust in driving across a bridge usually comes from experiencing the reliability and consistency day after day of safely crossing the bridge span. Similarly, leaders who consistently demonstrate trustworthiness in their actions and decision-making inspire confidence and build trust within their teams and organizations. By consistently following through on commitments, being transparent, and acting with integrity, leaders establish themselves as reliable and trustworthy.
Leadership Integrity Is Critical For Building Trust
Integrity is essential for building trust with your team and stakeholders. Without trust, your team will be less likely to follow your lead and less likely to work together effectively. Trust is also essential for building strong relationships with clients, customers, and partners.
In addition to building trust, integrity also creates a positive culture within your organization. When leaders model integrity, they set the tone for ethical behavior throughout the organization. This creates a culture of accountability and responsibility, which can lead to increased productivity, innovation, and job satisfaction.
Stress Cases
What happens when leaders are put under stress? There may be pressure to “make the numbers work”, only provide partial truth leaving out some of the risks, and possibly cross ethical and moral boundaries. In those examples, you might say the leader’s integrity failed under stress. It’s just like structural integrity where stresses are contemplated – but when a bridge is damaged it may fail under stress. Because of the loss of integrity, trustworthiness in the leader is lost or diminished.
What stress pressures are you currently experiencing?
How will you choose to act with full integrity?
What are you doing daily to demonstrate your trustworthiness?
